Emergency Medical Technician - EMS
JOB SUMMARY:
Operates ambulance and administers basic life support care to sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with state, administrative and standing order protocols

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Completion of a course of study leading to designation as EMT including extrication, stabilization and hazardous materials first responder courses
2. Must have 1 year field experience in an area covered by an Emergency Medical Services agency
3. Certified and/or eligible for certification as an EMT-Basic by the State of Arizona Department of Health Services
4. CPR certification required
5. Current and valid State of Arizona driver’s license; ability to speak and understand Pima language preferred
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. As primary EMS provider, initiates and assumes control of an EMS incident by organizing and facilitating scene operations to expedite patient care and transport
2. Responds to emergency calls by operating ambulance, gets address and/or directions from dispatcher
3. Initiates and performs basic life support procedures in accordance with state and medical control protocols including, but not limited to: performs CPR and ventilation of non-breathing and pulseless patient, maintains open airway in accordance with BLS methods, controls bleeding, bandages wounds and applies splints, delivers oxygen and performs spinal stabilization
4. Administers initial treatment at emergency scene, takes and records patient’s vital signs and physical assessment findings
5. Initiates contact with specified hospital destination; shares patient information with facility physician including response to treatment, drugs and significant incidents
6. Extricates trapped victims, initiates and assists in rescue operations necessary to delivery emergency medical care
7. Transfers patients to ambulance via back board and transports to designated hospital facility
8. Contacts insurance to verify coverage of patients
9. Participates in regular competency drills to ensure ability to accurately, correctly and safely operate all equipment
10. Assists in delivery of interagency, inter-facility and referral medical transportation as requested
11. Performs regular maintenance on all equipment, units, stations and supplies to ensure proper and safe operations
12. Completes patient encounter reports, activity logs, and other records in accordance with department protocols
13. Actively participates in a variety of community and school-based educational and informational programs to increase awareness and interest in first aid training
14. Actively participates with other Tribal and Public Safety agencies during staged drills and mock events
15. Escalates issues/problems involving mutual aid conflicts to EMS Shift Supervisor for resolution
16. Participates in departmental orientation, on the job training and quality assurance programs/initiatives
17. Participates in a variety of department and hospital educational programs to maintain current skills and competency levels; identifies and discusses performance or training needs with Supervisor
